I bet that you did not know that Johnny Cash started his career as a electronic spy, or what we call COMINT Morse Code Collector, a subdiscipline within SIGINT.
COMINT – Communications Intelligence
SIGINT – Signals Intelligence
Cash enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 7, 1950. After basic training at Lackland Air Force Base and technical training at Brooks Air Force Base, both in San Antonio, Texas, Cash was assigned to a U.S. Air Force Security Service unit, assigned as a Morse Code Intercept Operator at Landsberg, Germany for Soviet Army transmissions.
It was at Landsberg, Germany where Cash created his first band named The Landsberg Barbarians.
Johnny Cash’s other claim to fame: Cash is credited with being the first U.S. radio operator to pick up the news of the death of Joseph Stalin.
After Cash was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on July 3, 1954, he returned to Texas and the rest of his history is fairly well known.
I want to thank CWO Sandra Aultman (USA Retired) for bringing us this nugget of knowledge.
